Czech Republic National Library

The design of the competition for the National Library of the Czech Republic in Prague involved a weaving of public paths of the Letná Park into and through the building, establishing a diagonal atrium around which the different functions of the library are organized. The entire open ground floor and connected atrium extend the free-flowing public park program through the library. Structurally and stylistically, the design pays homage to baroque type vaults, both vertically for the main atrium skylight roof system and horizontally on the facades to define programmatic ‘vault’ niches and corrugated embedded sun-shades. This incorporation of environmental mediation devices within the structural and formal logics of the design is at a base of a research we have entitled Environmental Ornamentation.
